With a task given to me by And/Or, this case study was super fun exploring options within animation and compositions
THE BRIEF
Create a 15-second title animation for one of your favorite episodic shows or films. If using something contemporary as your source material avoid rehashing the established title animation.
- Must use the official logo
- Must be exactly 15s in length
- Must animate the show/film logo
- Avoid using talent imagery or footage from the actual content, should be unique
INITIAL RESEARCH AND IDEAS
So before diving in, I had to research the show. What is On My Black about? What imagery has the show used before, and why did they use the imagery that they did? What mood or moods do I want to portray?
CONCEPT 1
All characters throughout the show go through a journey of self descovery as they navigate through their high school years. Each character can have their own pages showcaes their “story” through visuals
related to the show or location.
Shown through small spaces or settings, certain items can represent either different characters from the show or future references in the show.
CONCEPT 2
-Moving forward with my second approach "a tour around the block" with a less expected approach of showcasing different textures that best represent each character
-Continue to explore frames for each character and ESPECIALLY explore what the final title logo will look like
-Think about how to integrate text and different textures graphically
-Think also how the text could inform the name or what is going on the screen
Based on these notes I had received, I was excited to be moving forwards with the second approach, keeping in mind that this title sequence needs to be 15 seconds, I decided to divide the work into 5 parts, with the 4 main characters each having 3 seconds, as well as the title card also having 3 seconds.
NOTES
Thoughts
It was only after I started working again did I realize I had been limiting myself. I had felt stuck more a moment so I decided to look again at what projects And/Or had done. That's where I found the use of bold type and dramatic imagery that also feels balanced. I had been trying to create compositions that were somewhat realistic, like having money on the ground with the correct proportions. Once I realized I was putting myself in a box, I decided to break out of that, making more expressive compositions while still being true to my concept.
V_01 Styleframes
Time to animate!
After making the styleframes, it was only a matter of deciding on how to move things. I didn't want to add extra elements that could be too distracting within the 3 seconds, meaning that previous elements I was planning on adding wouldn't be making the cut.
1st pass animation
Notes
Overall, the compositions feel flat. Trying to experiment with more dynamic compositions instead, as well as pushing depth. Think about how I am going to transition from one composition to the next and does it make sense and support the design choices.
