One Line Brief
From a quote from the director, I was tasked in creating a brief from just a seed of an idea that my art director threw out into the open.
“Can someone tell me what Yak Shaving is? I’m not up on the latest slang... I need my Urban Dictionary.”
Urban Dictionary is a crowdsourced online dictionary of slang words and phrases that was founded in 1999 as a parody of Dictionary.com and Vocabulary.com. Since this is crowdsourced, it oftentimes has crude or risqué slang words. For this brief, I wanted to explain what a commonly used slang word means to those who might not know. In this case, I chose to define what "rizz" means.
Pitch
When creating the my pitch, I knew I wanted to stay consistent with Urban Dictionary's branding. From there I knew I wanted to create a collage piece. After pitching, the 3rd option was chosen.
1st Pass Styleframes
After the third design approach got chosen, I tried to nail the layouts of the compositions that I was planning on incorporating. After talking to my art director, I needed to start showing how it was going to animate
With the collage style, I wanted to incorporate tactile elements, so I scanned in different ripped pieces of magazines and different variants of elements I wanted to include.
1st Pass
After having a script to base my timing off of, my art director pointed out that this is a great opportunity for some fun animation, and to focus on hierarchy and clarity. Keeping this in mind, I also wanted to try staying true to what style I was mimicking: collage.
